What is 40007 in Scientific Notation?

Let’s recall how to convert 40007 as detailed on our home page.

When you split the number 40007 into a coefficient and a power of 10 you do get 40007 in exponential form, but there is an indefinite number of possibilities.

As you probably want 40007 in normalized scientific notation, the coefficient or significand of 40007 must be in the interval [1,10[.

In other words, the coefficient has to be equal to or greater than 1 (≥1), and less than 10 (<10).

In this post we mean 40007 in the normalized version, unless stated otherwise.

Not a convention, but this reflects the use of the term in daily life.

Therefore:

40007 = 4.0007 × 104.

This can also be expressed as 4.0007 × 10^4 , using the caret symbol, or as 4.0007e+4, which is called 40007 in e-notation, further discussed in the section ahead.

40007 in Exponential Form

40007 in exponential form is ab, a is the base, and b is called the exponent, also known as index or power of the engineering notation of 40007.

You may think of the scientific notation as a special example of exponential numbers a^b – invented to display repeated multiplication efficiently – where the coefficient (significand) is 1 and the base equals 10.

Therefore the exponent (index) b is what defines how many times 10 x.

The term ab is called the exponential expression.

However, it’s important to understand that there is not a unique way to express 40007 in such a way; in fact there are countless possibilities:

By definition of exponential form, not only the index and coefficient, but also the base can be varied.

In contrast to using scientific notation for 40007, which has 10 as base.

In the following paragraph we elaborate on using scientific notation as a power of 10.

40007 as a Power of 10

As outlined above, there is more than one way to write 40007 as a power of 10.

Like any number written in scientific notation, 40007 has a significand (sometimes called a mantissa or coefficient) of 4.0007 multiplied by the power of ten 10000 expressed by the base 10 and index 4:

40007 = 4.0007 x 10000 = 4.0007 × 104.

Writing a number as a power of 10 is a “shorthand” form to express a repeated multiplication, too.

By the way: There are two conventions for naming powers of ten, known as the long and the short scale.

In English, the short scale is used almost everywhere these days, including on this website.

Summary

If you’re still here reading, you have made it almost through the end of our article about the notation in science.

In conclusion, 40007 = 4.0007 × 104.

“Standard index form”, “power of 10”, “e-notation” as well as “exponential form” mean exactly or nearly the same, just to name a few.

So, if you have found us searching for a synonym term such as notation form, then you have also learned all you wanted to know about it.

In this post we have also provided you with an app, our table in the appendix, and a frequently asked questions section to explain you all about the scientific notation of forty thousand seven.

Instead of superscript, you may also come across the caret symbol: 4.0007 × 10^4.

Note that you can locate many numbers including, but not limited to 40007 using the search form in the sidebar and in the menu of this post.
